Net-Zero Mar Alliance launches its working groups

Valencia, 7 November 2022. – The Net-Zero Mar Alliance has recently launched two of the working groups scheduled for 2022, one of them focused on the supply of electricity to ships from port and the second on the Roadmap for the decarbonisation of the port maritime sector.

It should be remembered that the Net-Zero Mar Alliance is a collaborative platform whose main objective is to promote the decarbonisation and electrification of the maritime sector in Spain and which was launched at the end of last year. This non-profit platform will be available to all agents, companies and institutions that wish to join forces to reduce polluting emissions generated by infrastructures and maritime transport.

The main objectives of this working group were defined during the working table on electricity supply to ships from ports, which was attended by more than 35 participants. These include monitoring international trends, developing business models, identifying OPS (Onshore Power Supply) installations in Spanish ports, categorising ports by type of electricity grid, analysing exemptions and port incentive mechanisms, as well as the associated regulations and evaluating sustainable operation profiles. This working group is chaired by Guillermo Amann, from Ormazabal, with Raúl Gil Cazorla, from ABB Spain, as current vice-chairman.

For its part, the working group on the Roadmap for the decarbonisation of the maritime port sector, in which more than 25 partners participated, established as its main objective the need for the energy transition process in the maritime port sector to be efficient and to be carried out in a planned manner. The specific objectives agreed are to draw up an adjusted and representative profile of the current state of greenhouse gas emissions; to learn about the technological alternatives and trends that facilitate the decarbonisation of the sector; to carry out an analysis of the existing regulatory and strategic framework and to identify the available aid and funding opportunities. This working group is chaired by María Merino, from Ghenova and Pablo Campos, from Grupo Junquera Marítima.

Another new feature of this collaborative platform is that its website www.netzeromar.org is now operational. This is an essential tool for the sector to have access to all the information on the Net-Zero Mar Alliance, its working groups, activities, documents and publications that may be of interest to its members. In addition, the Net-Zero Sea Alliance has started its activity on the professional network LinkedIn (www.linkedin.com/company/alianza-net-zero-mar) with the aim of offering relevant content on a weekly basis to the interested maritime port community in line with its strategic objectives.

The Net-Zero Mar Alliance aims to position the Spanish maritime industry as a leader in reducing emissions in maritime port environments by using alternative technologies to achieve these objectives. To this end, it will establish a continuous dialogue between all stakeholders in the sector, as well as with official bodies; it will tackle specific projects and will focus on research, development and innovation to support this transformation.

The Net-Zero Mar Alliance, whose general secretariat is managed by Fundación Valenciaport, is currently made up of the following entities: ABB, Abervian, Autoridad Portuaria de Alicante, Autoridad Portuaria de València, Baleària, Bound4blue, Centro de Investigación en Tecnología, Energía y Sostenibilidad de la Universidad de Huelva (CITES), Endurance Motive S.A., FRS, Fundación Valenciaport, Grupo Junquera Marítima, Ghenova, Grupo Gimeno, Grupo Consulmar, Ingeteam, Iberdrola, Instituto Tecnológico de la Energía (ITE), Man Energy Solutions, MSCTV Terminal Valencia, Navantia S.A., Ormazabal – A Velatia Company, Port Castelló, Puerto Banús, PYMAR, RINA, Seaplace, Suardíaz Shipping Lines, Tecnalia, Tubacex Group and Universitat Politécnica de València.
