PORTWIN is a project co-funded by the Valencian Innovation Agency, led by the Valencian start-up Fivecomm and with the collaboration of Fundación Valenciaport, A4Radar, Cellnex Telecom and the Port Authority of Valencia. Its main objective is the exploitation of 5G and radar technologies to provide assistance to the process of berthing ships in the port of Valencia.
The solution designed in PORTWIN, based on 5G smart radars, contributes to facilitate this berthing process, thanks to the real-time communication of the distance, speed and orientation of the vessels with respect to the berthing quay. This information is obtained through the use of radars, transmitted via 5G technology, processed in the Edge, and represented in an application that, thanks to its graphic interface, allows the position and distance of the vessel with respect to the dock to be visualised in real time from any device.
By using this application, the captain, tugs, pilots and moorers can know the position of the ship with millimetric precision during the entire docking phase, thus allowing more efficient decision-making that contributes to optimising operations and increasing efficiency and safety in this complex process.
Within PORTWIN and in collaboration with the Port Authority of Valencia, Fundación Valenciaport plays the role of facilitator for the adoption and validation of 5G technology within the logistics-port environment of the port of Valencia. Specifically, Fundación Valenciaport has been an active player in the definition and planning of the pilot, which aims to evaluate the combination of 5G and radar technologies to provide a ship berthing assistance service. The Foundation has also participated in the integration between the existing telecommunications infrastructure and the 5G node installed to provide access to technicians for maintenance and administration of the 5G network.
