Fundación Valenciaport provides training on energy transition and decarbonisation in ports to 27 Brazilian managers

This collaboration is part of Fundación Valenciaport’s participation as a facilitator in the Brazilian Alliance for the Decarbonisation of Ports.

Valencia, February 29th, 2024. – This week 27 managers from ports, terminals and the Ministry of Ports of Brazil have travelled to Valencia to be trained in energy transition and decarbonisation of ports in a programme given by professionals from Fundación Valenciaport and the Port Authority of Valencia.

The background to this training is the participation of the Fundación Valenciaport in the Brazilian Alliance for the Decarbonisation of Ports (ABDP), an initiative promoted by Brazilian ports and institutionally supported by Fundación Valenciaport.

The course, which was inaugurated by Antonio Torregrosa, Director General of Fundación Valenciaport; Federico Torres, Director of Ecological Transition of APV; Ana Rumbeu, Director of Training of Fundación Valenciaport; Jonas Mendes, Senior Consultant in Port Strategy of Fundación Valenciaport; Bruna Roncel, coordinator of the Ministry of Ports and Airports of Brazil and Luane Lemos, coordinator of the ADPB, aims to present to the participants the current situation of the industry in terms of decarbonisation and the new trends in the sector, as well as to present the good practices and innovation projects developed by the Fundación Valenciaport, the Port of Valencia and the companies of the Valencian port cluster.

According to the coordinator of the Brazilian Ministry of Ports and Airports, Bruna Roncel, “this programme represents the strong commitment of the Ministry in the implementation of this sustainability agenda in ports and maritime transport in Brazil”.

For her part, Luane Lemos, ABDP coordinator and Environmental Manager of the Port of Iraqi stated that “this certification is the first result of the work of the Brazilian Alliance, which we have just launched with the support of Fundación Valenciaport. It is very important to level the knowledge of the professionals who are leading this issue in Brazilian ports and terminals”.

The participants in this programme have had the opportunity to be trained in subjects such as green hydrogen in ports; electricity supply systems for ships, also known as Onshore Power Supply (OPS); the calculation of the carbon footprint; the preparation of the decarbonisation plan in ports; climate change and its impact on ports; or the production of renewable energy in port environments, among others. In addition, they got to know in depth the Valenciaport Zero Emissions Plan 2030 and the objectives of the Net Zero-MAR Alliance association.

In addition to the theoretical subjects, the course has included different technical visits, such as the visit to the Port of Valencia, in which the participants have been able to see first-hand the hydrogen plant developed within the framework of the European project H2PORTS, the spectrographic camera for the detection of emissions, the photovoltaic installations, or the electrified MSC terminal.

Today, Thursday, the Brazilian delegation will visit the facilities of the National Hydrogen Centre and Iberdrola‘s hydrogen plant in Puertollano, Ciudad Real.

This course has been a new opportunity to exchange experiences with the Brazilian ports and to identify potential collaborations in numerous fields.
