GreenMED – Green Shipping Pathways Towards a Clean Energy Transition in the Mediterranean

The objective of GreenMED ‘Green Shipping Pathways Towards a Clean Energy Transition in the Mediterranean’ is to boost green shipping in the Mediterranean basin by analysing the energy demand of the currently operating fleet and assessing transition scenarios towards a sustainable future.

The project will carry out an analysis of bunkering supply in selected Mediterranean ports, including European and North African countries, and define specific scenarios based on future potentials and various economic, social and environmental criteria.

Among other aspects, GreenMED will assess regional ship energy demands, bunkering supply chains in the Mediterranean basin and emerging technologies related to sustainable transport. In addition, it will analyse the deployment plans for sustainable fuel bunkering infrastructure aligned with the demand derived from the decarbonisation plans considered in the scenarios.

As a main outcome, an online platform entitled “Mediterranean Sustainable Shipping Observatory” (MSSO) will be developed to interactively display the main results of the project.

For the development of the project, Fundación Valenciaport will lead the tasks related to the collection of technical, environmental and financial data, as well as the techno-economic analysis of the results. In addition, it will lead different activities focused on achieving zero-emission maritime transport in the Mediterranean. In particular, it will be responsible for the development of an interactive tool to present the results of the project in the form of best practices adapted to the needs of stakeholders.

The Foundation will be in charge of carrying out these analyses applied to the Spanish case and to some other countries without representation in the project consortium. This work will allow cluster companies to know the impact that the decarbonisation of the maritime fleet will have on the bunkering infrastructure, as well as the supply possibilities in the different scenarios considered.
