TERMINAL INDUSTRY COMMITTEE – TIC4.0

The port-logistics sector faces constant challenges to perform its activity in an increasingly efficient manner. Over the last decade, development and innovation in cargo handling equipment has responded to local requirements and specifications set by port operators. Currently, interconnecting various equipment and systems is complex, costly and risky due to the absence of a common data language. The few automated container terminals in operation today are closed systems that have been custom-designed and costly.

Rapid advances in information technology and, in particular, digitization are creating new possibilities for the industry, which could improve processes by connecting all equipment and systems in real time, thus enabling standardized data exchanges. Under these new conditions, any type of equipment will have the ability to connect to universal open platforms.

The key factor enabling the port industry to take full advantage of these technological advances is to rapidly develop and adopt industry standards that will allow objective comparisons of performance indicators and define the format and protocols for electronic data exchange.

TIC4.0 aims to bring together representative companies in the sector, bringing together port terminal operators, equipment manufacturers and developers of digital solutions to work collectively on the development of these standards.

The main objectives of ICT4.0 are as follows:

  • Defining and agreeing on standard process semantics, as well as common language and operational definitions among the agents involved in the port industry.
  • Making technical publications available to facilitate the adoption of standards by industry stakeholders.
  • Promoting operational Proofs of Concept (PoC) to facilitate the interoperability of the different information subsystems of cargo handling facilities.
  • Encouraging the deployment and adoption of ICT4.0 standards.
  • To foster innovation, collaborating with companies, institutions, training centers and R&D&I centers.
  • Promoting cohesion within the port logistics community, fostering cooperation within the sector and dialogue with the public, within the framework of a collective strategy of social responsibility.

Regarding the role of Fundación Valenciaport, it acts as the General Secretariat of the association, developing technical coordination actions, organization of General Assemblies, economic-financial management and promotion at fairs and congresses.
