The Pan-European Workshop on Circular Economy in Ports of the LOOP-Ports project will identify and characterise the areas of intervention in the sector in this field

Valencia – 05.10.2020. Fundación Valenciaport has organised, in the framework of the European project LOOP-Ports, a Pan-European Workshop on circular economy in ports, which will be held on 7th October through its Virtual Classroom platform, and to which both members of its network of stakeholders and other port authorities of the European Union have been invited to participate.

The main objective of this initiative is to address the barriers and challenges faced by organisations in terms of regulation, technological issues, training, etc. in relation to the circular economy. In order to facilitate the debate, exchange experiences and share good practices, the workshop will be structured in different working sessions, focusing on 3 main areas: circular port assets, circular flows in ports, and circular ports and markets, identified during the project as the main areas of intervention when addressing circular economy solutions.

During the first part of the workshop, the results of the LOOP-Ports project to date will be briefly presented. EIT Climate-KIC for its part, as co-financer of this initiative, will also make a presentation of other projects related to the circular economy that are currently being carried out in the maritime port sector.

In the second part of the workshop, the participants will then be divided into heterogeneous working groups and will debate on the potentiality offered by this long-term vision of port sustainability in the various areas of intervention identified during the project. The sessions will be led by a moderator and a facilitator and will have an interactive character through the use of online participation tools with the aim of gathering both quantitative and qualitative results on what is being done in the circular economy in the sector.

LOOP-Ports

The European project “LOOP-Ports – Circular Economy Network of Ports”, coordinated by Fundación Valenciaport and financed by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) through EIT Climate-KIC, has as its main objective to facilitate the transition towards a more circular economy in the port sector, where products, materials and resources are not considered as waste but can become sustainable and replicable business models in ports of similar characteristics.

The project, through the creation of a Circular Economy Network in Ports, will provide an ecosystem of innovation to stimulate the implementation of this type of initiative in the European ports. The network will mainly focus on the following materials: metals, plastics, cements and biomaterials. This network of ports will facilitate the exchange of experiences and good practices, make recommendations at the regulatory level and promote training as well as new business opportunities both in the port clusters and in other industries related to their environment.
