The development of intermodal freight transport is a clear objective in the European Transport Policy, and the intermodality of rail and maritime freight plays a central role in this regard.

The main aim of the project was to help achieve greater maritime-railway integration through a better understanding of the current situation, the drafting of standards and recommendations, and the development of practical methods for maritime-railway intermodality projects.

Specifically, project achievements include the following:

• Analysis of the current status of maritime-railway intermodality in Spain, accounting for traffic and infrastructure.
• Setting standards and making recommendations for the development and improvement of maritime-railway integration, taking into account the physical level (access and infrastructure), the functional level (services and marketing), and the knowledge management level (information and documents).
• Development of practical methods to apply in maritime-railway intermodality projects, aimed at identifying needs as well as sizing, assessing and evaluating said needs.
• Practical application with real-world case studies of different ports on the Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts.
• Production of a detailed guide for the design and scaling of port-rail terminals, including technical recommendations, methodologies, standards and examples of application.
