The aim of the project was to create, calibrate and maintain a traffic simulation model of the road and rail networks within the Port of Valencia, and the development of specialized studies using the model as an analysis tool for taking all decisions that affect traffic within the port premises (modifications to the infrastructure, location of security control points, signposting systems, the definition of contingency plans for traffic incidents, control systems, etc.).
For the input, work was carried out to estimate current and future volumes of traffic, taking into account the different types of vehicles, the daily distribution, and their origins and destinations, with the detailed development of OD matrices at one-hour intervals. The characteristics and configuration of the different types of vehicles (maximum speed, desired speed, acceleration, etc.), specific stretches of road (road width, number of lanes, signposting, etc.), intersections (possible detours, give way, stop, crossings, etc.), traffic lights etc., are also essential data for the model.
The model was created using Aimsun, a specialized software for the micro-simulation of traffic.
