The CLIMATHON of the Port of Valencia provides innovative ideas in CO2 capture

Valencia – 28.10.19. The CLIMATHON held last Friday in the port of Valencia and organised by the Valenciaport Foundation and the Port Authority of Valencia ( PAV), with the support of EIT Climate-KIC Spain, was attended by 25 competitors from universities, energy and technology companies and the port sector who, organised in 4 teams, tackled for 12 hours new methodologies and technologies for carbon dioxide capture in port facilities.

The winning team was called “COBUILDING PORTS”, made up of Julia Ponce, Cristina Herrero, Mª Ángeles Villalba, Luisa Patiño and Pedro Vico, who proposed, as the best option, the capture of CO2 in the port of Valencia by means of devices, already available on the market, which produce calcium carbonate, which would be transferred to the cement industry in sustainable vehicles for the production of cement, to be used both in the new infrastructures of the port of Valencia and in other buildings in such a way as to complete the cycle on which the circular economy is based.

The second prize went to the “Posidonia” group which proposed a microalgae installation for CO2 capture and conversion to biodiesel for port use. Other solutions proposed ranged from the installation of olivine stone on the beach of Pinedo, a mineral that would capture almost all the CO2 released by the port of Valencia, leaving a “green” beach that could attract the attention of sustainable tourism; to the installation of mobile CO2 capture units on land and on boats.

Valenciaport’s CLIMATHON was one of the first activities organised in the facilities of #SuperLabPorts, the maritime and port sector’s climate change entrepreneurship and innovation space, recently inaugurated last week.

The winning team of the CLIMATHON will have to choose between a €1,000 voucher for the purchase of technological material or a 3-month stay at #SuperLabPorts with the advice of experts from the Valenciaport Foundation and the Port Authority of Valencia. The second-placed team received a bag with technological material, courtesy of APV.
