Valencia – 13.10.2020. Last September, the Fundación Valenciaport presented its proposal of an Intelligent Port for the National Port Authority (APN) of Callao within the framework of the Smart Ports Toolkit project financed by the Inter-American Development Bank (IADB).
This initiative, which has been coordinated by the Digital Government Committee of the APN with the support of the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism of Peru (MINCETUR), started at the end of 2019 with several meetings between the Fundación Valenciaport and the various agents of the port community of Callao, and was completed by two meetings with the Multisectoral Commission for the Facilitation of Foreign Trade (COMUFAL) and with a group of representatives of the logistics-port community, of foreign trade and academia.
The Smart Ports Toolkit is a tool created by Fundación Valenciaport to facilitate the monitoring and evaluation of the transformation process of a port enclave into an intelligent port. This document, which will be used by the port authority and/or port terminals, bases its content on the identification of good international practices, listing different intelligent port initiatives and including a list of quantitative and qualitative indicators that can be measured in order to follow up and evaluate the development achieved.
In the case of the Port of Callao, the project also proposes: strategies to be followed, emerging technologies to be implemented (Big data, Blockchain, IoT, Distributed Ledger, IA, ML), barriers to be faced and challenges to be taken up. These will enable the progress of the first port of the country from an initial level of internal digital transformation, towards a level of hyperconnected port.
A key aspect of this initiative has been the participation of the main representatives of the port community of Callao, involving both the public and private sectors: SUNAT; MTC; Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF); National Council of Competitiveness and Formalisation (CNC); OSITRAN; Regional Government of Callao; Provincial Municipality of Callao and operators of the port terminals of Callao such as DP World Callao; APM Terminals Callao and Transportadora Callao.
The Fundación Valenciaport has implemented this initiative, not only in the port of Callao but also in the port of Valparaiso (Chile), and is currently in the process of completing the evaluation of the port of Kingston (Jamaica).
