- TRUSTEE will focus particularly on safety in facilities aimed at developing zero emission technologies in shipping such as high capacity batteries, hydrogen fuel cells and ammonia or methanol storage.
- The initiative has a budget of around 850,000 euros, co-funded by CINEA’s Horizon Europe program.
Valencia, February the26th, 2025. – Yesterday was held in Naples, Italy, the kick-off meeting of the safety and sustainability project TRUSTEE ‘Future proof efficient and sustainable deployment of ZEWT‘.
The initiative, led by the Institute for Sustainable Society and Innovation (ISSNOVA) and in which Fundación Valenciaport participates, has a budget of about 850,000 € co-financed by the Horizon Europe program of the European Executive Agency for Climate, Infrastructure and Environment (CINEA).
The ultimate goal of the project is to develop a roadmap for the deployment of Zero Emission Waterborne Transport (ZEWT), boosting sustainability without compromising safety. A particular focus is on safety in facilities aimed at developing zero emission technologies in shipping, which is critical to ensure an efficient and reliable transition. These facilities handle advanced systems, such as high-capacity batteries, hydrogen fuel cells and ammonia or methanol storage, which can pose significant risks if not properly managed.
The implementation of strict safety protocols not only protects workers and the environment, but also reinforces the operational viability of these technologies, facilitating their adoption in the industry.
The project will also include the development of a multidimensional benchmarking framework that incorporates environmental, social, technological, financial and operational aspects, as well as safety and security aspects, in the maritime and port sector.
The project’s objectives also include defining and validating the future European ecosystem for safe and emission-free maritime transport, through forecasting scenarios for the period between 2030 and 2050; developing and validating the most promising use cases for the same time period; identifying possible systemic and sectoral barriers; and compiling recommendations for their correct implementation.
For the development of the project, Fundación Valenciaport will contribute its knowledge and extensive experience in this type of projects, use cases and pilot tests in ports.
With the launch of this project, there are now 10 initiatives on safety and security in ports in which Fundación Valenciaport is simultaneously involved, including projects such as OVERHEAT, on the prevention and management of accidents caused by fires on board ships, or ST Bernard, related to the detection and identification of radioactive, biological, chemical and explosive agents. In the area of energy transition and sustainability, the sum of the initiatives in which the company is currently involved amounts to 15 projects.
