Last week was held in Brussels (Belgium) the kick-off meeting of the TwinShip project ‘Integrated Digital Twin Framework to Enable Green Ship Operations Towards Zero Emission Vessels’, an initiative that aims to revolutionize the maritime sector through the creation of an integrated digital framework, based on a digital twin, which will allow a greener operation of ships.
The initiative, led by an international consortium of technology companies, solution providers, shipping companies and research organizations, including the Valenciaport Foundation, has a budget of nearly 10 million euros co-financed by the Horizon Europe program.
Thanks to this project, an open source digital platform will be developed that will use advanced artificial intelligence and machine learning to optimize maritime operations. One of its main goals is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the maritime industry by 30-40% by 2030 and reach zero emissions by 2045, all using clean technologies and unmanned vessels as part of sustainable solutions.
The digital twin developed under TwinShip will serve as a decision support system, enabling the shipping industry to quickly adapt to environmental regulations and optimize the use of clean and renewable fuels. The project also focuses on energy efficiency, prioritizing both current and emerging fuels to minimize emissions. Through pilots and innovative concepts of autonomous vessels, TwinShip seeks to demonstrate the feasibility of an environmental and digital transformation, driving sustainable management in shipping.
Fundación Valenciaport will participate in the identification of the functional and user requirements of the decision support system and digital twins, with a particular focus from the port’s perspective, and will support in establishing the connection between the ships’ digital twin and the port’s digital twin. It will also collaborate in the dissemination and validation of project results.
TwinShip Consortium
The project consortium consists of a total of 18 entities including the University of Tromsø (coordinator), Fundación Valenciaport, Grimaldi, Stena Line, SINTEF and Wärtsilä, among others.
