Valencia, April 10th, 2025. – The Security working group of the Valenciaport Cluster Innovation Committee met yesterday in a session led by Rafael Company, Director of Security of Fundación Valenciaport, which was attended by representatives of the Port Authority of Valencia, Cosco Shipping, TransBase Soler, Valencia Terminal Europa, Boluda, Raminatrans, Medlog, ANV and APM Terminals, among others.

During the session, several key safety and security issues raised as priorities in the previous meeting were addressed. Among them, the analysis of risks associated with chemical products in the transport of containerized cargo, as well as different aspects related to compliance with the new European directive NIS2 on cybersecurity, stood out.

Likewise, the details of the new call for projects of the Horizon Europe 2026-2027 program were presented, exploring possible lines of participation and the two new projects in the field of security approved by the commission in the 2025-2026 call were presented: ATHENA and CUSTOM AI.

Finally, the participants in the session were able to attend a small demonstration of the illicit goods detection technology being developed in the VPSCAN/METEOR project, where the technology company MION Technologies showed how the equipment works and its main features.

The use of this equipment consists of an innovative non-intrusive vapor-based container inspection technology, with state-of-the-art analytical instrumentation, with the capacity to cover all 5 illicit substances inside a container, and processing techniques based on Non-Directed Screening for intelligent threat analysis.

METEOR PROJECT

This is an initiative whose main objective is to increase the security of maritime transport, specifically of goods transported by container, by detecting all types of illicit substances.

Among the main characteristics of the technology used by the project are its portability and versatility, adaptable to different types of scenarios and its non-intrusive nature, with a high detection rate and low false alarm rate. In addition, the illicit substances it can detect include narcotics, explosives and even biological threats, among many others.

Fundación Valenciaport plays a crucial role in this consortium, formed by 12 partners, as it guarantees accessibility to carry out the scanning of containers in the port and is the facilitator for the companies developing the technology, obtaining more than 250 air samples from real containers, taking place in one of the port’s terminals.
