The objective of the project is the installation and implementation of a private 5G Standalone (SA) telecommunications network in the Port of Valencia, a pivotal initiative in the digitization of logistics-port and maritime transport. This network, in self-service mode and without economic compensation, will offer coverage in port areas with the aim of implementing a series of services that facilitate the operation and digitization of the Port of Valencia.
Focused on cutting-edge technologies, the project integrates a 5G private network core and a Radio Access Network, incorporating Edge Computing for minimum latency. It also includes the deployment of the Network as a Service platform, streamlining the management of network resources, and a robust Cybersecurity platform tailored to safeguard the entire network.
The network, designed for high performance and mobility, wide coverage and massive device connectivity, facilitates real-time applications and diverse use cases for operational efficiency and security. With the Port of Valencia being one of the leading European ports, this pioneering project has the potential to set standards for other ports’ digitization efforts.
An essential task of the project is to validate the installation of the network through the implementation of two real use cases. For this purpose, a police surveillance system will be set up in the port area in order to strengthen port security and safety by installing cameras in police vehicles and remote areas. The other use case will include the deployment of a remote monitoring and training service in the maintenance of port facilities, allowing local personnel to carry out these tasks efficiently with real-time assistance from remote experts through an advanced telepresence system.
The project ultimately seeks to optimize resources in the midst of port expansion, with an emphasis on environmental benefits and operational efficiency.
The Port Authority of Valencia and Fundación Valenciaport have joined forces to implement this project.
The Port Authority of Valencia assumes a dual role as public body and network operator, leading the technical aspects of the 5G network implementation and the use case “port police surveillance system” in line with the role of general interest service provider. Fundación Valenciaport will act as project coordinator assuming the leadership in the management, communication and training tasks of the project, as well as in the remote monitoring and training use case.
