For the electrification of maritime and IW vessels to be competitive when it comes to decarbonization, energy storage systems need to be optimized in terms of weight, operational reliability and safety. The HARPOONERS “Achieving high voltage, low weight, efficient electric powertrains for sustainable waterborne transport” project will overcome this challenge by developing a compact modular system that interconnects high-voltage grids on board, eliminating the need for transformers and cooling systems on ships.
The aim of the project is to create a lighter, more reliable and safer energy storage system that will facilitate the total electrification of small and medium-sized vessels, reducing CO2 emissions and environmental impact, as well as manufacturing and maintenance costs.
As a member of the project consortium, Fundación Valenciaport will provide support in defining the system requirements and specifications, including a study in the Port of Valencia with specific vessels.
In addition, it will collaborate in the definition of the specifications and requirements for the integration of the HARPOONERS solution taking into account the modularity, flexibility and adaptability to high voltage alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC) systems of the storage system.
