The aim of the POWER4MED project is to drive the transition towards carbon neutrality in shipping. This transition requires, in the short term, the use of transition fuels (LNG), and in the medium term, securing the supply of green fuels, such as green hydrogen, methanol, electricity and wind.
However, coping with this complexity can be very difficult for small ship operators. POWER4MED therefore aims to support them through the development of the POWER4MED Support Structure, developed by a multidisciplinary team of experts and a set of tools to facilitate the path to carbon neutrality for three sectors; fishing vessels, commercial vessels and marinas.
Its main objectives are:
- Analysing what operators are looking for and what fuel alternatives are available.
- Evaluating energy investment options, taking into account the need for short-term investments and the cost structure for adaptation.
- Analysing technological alternatives towards decarbonisation.
- Conducting assessment and pilot studies of retrofitting costs for the greening of local infrastructures and the transition of ships to fully sustainable fuel sources.
- Studying regulatory aspects on the basis of ongoing consultations, in order to support the transition of the fleet.
- To assess and pilot studies of financial tools that could be used for decarbonisation.
- To capitalise on experiences and models being developed in EU ports and shipping companies through the development of sectoral or national POWER4MED tools (strategies,
- transition plans, capacity building tools).
- Developing the POWER4MED support structure as a means to use the results after the end of the project.
- Networking with relevant EU initiatives and ensuring dissemination across a wide geographical area of the Mediterranean.
