The objective of the RENEWPORT project is to address CO2 emissions by supporting the clean energy transition of Mediterranean ports and transforming them from pollutant and greenhouse gas emitting centres to clean energy centres, taking advantage of the untapped potential of renewable energy sources.
To achieve this objective, a toolkit will be developed to provide practical advice, guidance and calculation of the potential for ports to use renewable energy sources, based on their energy needs. This will provide Mediterranean ports with a powerful solution to plan their transition to clean energy.
Moreover, the project partners will test the use of these sources, as well as green hydrogen sources, in different scenarios. Not only will this concretely improve the performance of port operations in terms of climate change and air quality, but the conclusions of the work will also lead to the definition of a toolkit for ports as clean energy centres; a replicable solution for other ports.
Finally, the project partners will establish a long-term cooperation network in the field of clean energy transition, transferring the results at local, transnational and macro-regional level, while establishing a strong cooperation with other projects of similar scope.
Fundación Valenciaport will be in charge of developing the toolkit and carrying out a pilot test by installing walkable photovoltaic panels in an area of the Port of Valencia.
This pilot is a second phase of a smaller initial prototype, with a power of 1 kWp and a surface area of 6 m2, which was launched in 2021. In this new phase, a second generation of these innovative walkable panels will be implemented with a larger surface area of approximately 30 m2 and a higher installed power of 4.5 kWp.
