The EMSA project, Safety of Ammonia, proposes to lay the foundation for the use of ammonia as a bunker fuel by providing a framework of methodologies, safety assessment and reliability analysis, as well as a technical guidance document, so that a degree of harmonisation can take place across the port logistics sector.
The project will focus in particular on the characterisation of ammonia as a chemical and fuel, reviewing available standards, regulations and practices and preliminary considerations for the safety of ships using ammonia as a fuel.
In addition, it will develop the following parameters:
- Safety assessment and reliability analysis of some specific equipment, systems and systems of systems
- Safety assessment of a generic ship design to evaluate basic systems and components.
- Safety assessment of two specific ship designs/types to take into account specialised technical solutions.
- Development of an objective-based Guide for ammonia-fuelled ships.
Fundación Valenciaport will contribute its experience in the implementation of alternative fuels in projects such as H2PORTS and POSEIDON, which involve the use of hydrogen and e-methanol as fuel, respectively. It will also contribute with the experience gained in the use of ammonia as a cargo at the Port of Sagunto. The foundation is leading the characterisation of ammonia and will participate in risk analysis tasks, as well as in the development of guidelines and recommendations.
