FEPORTS outsourced Valenciaport Foundation to carry out the “Study of the logistics impact of the launch of the intermodal station of Sagunto.” The study was developed in the framework of the European PIRENE IV project (Needs of interconnections of regions in Southwest Europe: Optimisation of the infrastructure network from a multimodal approach) financed by the INTERREG IVB SUDOE programme, in which FEPORTS was one of the partners.
The study aimed to evaluate the impact of the intermodal platform of Sagunto from three perspectives:
- Logistics: analysing the impact of the platform on the modal split.
- Infrastructure: forecasting the optimum evolution of infrastructure over the mid to long term.
- Environment: evaluating the potential effect that the launch of the station could have on CO2 emissions and other external factors.
To this effect the study started by analysing traffic flows and the configuration of the logistics chains of key sectors, followed by a revision of the results of similar other studies previously undertaken, modal choice models and field work carried out with shippers, railway operators and transport and logistics companies. Furthermore, different scenarios were put forth in function of the economic conjuncture, for the duration of the construction of the platform, as well as of all the other conditioning factors that can influence the modal choice for the traffic flows of goods.
