TWINSHIP – INTEGRATED DIGITAL TWIN FRAMEWORK TO ENABLE GREEN SHIP OPERATIONS TOWARDS ZERO EMISSION VESSELS

The TwinShip project, ‘Integrated Digital Twin Framework to Enable Green Ship Operations Towards Zero Emission Vessels‘, aims to revolutionize the maritime sector by creating an integrated digital framework, based on a digital twin, that will enable greener ship operations.

Led by an international consortium of technology companies, solution providers, shipping companies and research organizations, the project will develop an open source digital platform that will use advanced artificial intelligence and machine learning to optimize maritime operations. One of its main goals is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 30-40% by 2030 and achieve zero emissions by 2045, all using clean technologies and unmanned vessels as part of sustainable solutions.

The digital twin to be developed will serve as a decision support system, enabling the shipping industry to quickly adapt to environmental regulations and optimize the use of clean and renewable fuels. The project also focuses on energy efficiency, prioritizing both current and emerging fuels to minimize emissions. Through pilots and innovative concepts of autonomous vessels, TwinShip seeks to demonstrate the feasibility of an environmental and digital transformation, driving sustainable management in shipping.

Fundación Valenciaport will be involved in the identification of the functional and user requirements of the decision support system (DSS) and digital twins (DT), with a particular focus from the port perspective, and will support in establishing the connection between the digital twin of the ships and that of the port. It will also be involved in the dissemination and validation of the project results.

The project will be coordinated by the University of Tromsø and the consortium consists of 18 entities including Grimaldi, Stena Line, SINTEF and Wärtsilä.
